Money Equals Attention

EI News Blog Post Heading Banner for Blog Post Expanding into Emerging iGaming Markets: Payment Risks You Can’t Ignore by Viktoria Soltesz, Payment Consultant of the Year 2023/24, Author, Trainer

I have been working in the field of compliance for over 15 years. During this time, I have handled a large number of cases in which compliance with applicable regulations and standards was verified. With the benefit of hindsight, I would like to offer a brief reflection from the perspective of someone who truly loves their profession.

Compliance primarily focuses on exact facts, documents, confirmations, and the outcomes of registered events. Whether it is the birth of a person or the establishment of a company, it always involves a specific action, event, result, and subsequent plan. All these activities are based on human attention. Personally, I consider attention to be the most valuable commodity of our time. Where our attention goes, ideas, plans, actions, and milestones follow, and in practice, these milestones often appear as documents recording specific circumstances.

The value of human attention today is closely linked to money. An individual or company with millions of followers can, in an instant, deliver information to millions of people, focusing their attention on a particular event or subject. In my view, this is the greatest value of our time. Naturally, attention is the result of trust. When we trust someone, we give them our time – our most precious resource – and share the most valuable thing we have.

Modern business models across various industries are built on the ability to attract and maintain people’s attention. This is how an initial idea can be monetised and often bold projects realised. Within this chain of steps, compliance acts as a registration point, confirming that a milestone has been achieved, adding trust to the project, and reinforcing people’s attention.

Compliance work also includes safeguarding shareholders. It is crucial to register any discrepancies promptly and focus on seemingly minor details that could play a key role in a project’s success. As we know, a loss of trust often leads to a decrease in attention and consequently, potential loss of profitability.

It does not matter which industry you operate in. What matters is how effectively you can capture human attention and maintain audience trust. If you master these tools, you will not only have well-established compliance processes but also a highly effective and sustainable business model.

The regulated gambling industry can be seen in this context as a competition for human attention. Companies in our sector compete not only among themselves but also with other activities that can divert people’s attention, such as sports, nature, or other hobbies. I am not implying these activities are less valuable. I personally run marathons and understand how much time and attention this hobby requires. Rather, I want to emphasise that the competition for attention is omnipresent and occurs at a higher level than just local business rivalry.

Finally, I would like to add that every one of us is exposed daily to an overwhelming amount of information and stimuli. Here, too, the principle of internal compliance applies. It is essential to manage our attention and time wisely to avoid unnecessary waste.

Wishing a smile to all who have just read this, and thank you for your attention.
